Summer is almost here

Summer, we all love to hear that word. Rising temperatures, no school, friends, not having to wake up early, and just doing whatever you want. Rising temperatures don’t really apply to my case a lot because it is always hot here in Puerto Rico, but when I am studying in that spring semester in the University of Dayton, wow… It is very cold, so yes I appreciate just coming back and it being very hot especially in the summer time. I love summer for a lot of reasons. I get to be home and go to the beach all the time and have a great time with my friends but not only that, I get to see my family which is great. There is also a lot of facts regarding summer and our health as stated by the Daily Mail which include promoting digestion, regulating body temperature, improving the health and vitality of our skin and flushing toxins from the body. In the summer months we are more inclined to drink the recommended two liters of water a day needed for optimum health. Summer isn’t a time to forget about your life either, it is a time I take to get better mentally and physically to be at my best to when I come back to school. I love going to college a lot, but a break is needed to reflect and summer does that job. I am so excited that summer is almost here and I will make the most of it.

Quarantine For My Friends

It is very sad to think about what is happening. It feels like this is just a very long dream. The truth is that it is not a dream, and this is actually happening, or is it? Now, on a serious note for this blog I wanted to involve some of my friends and thanks to the internet and social media I am allowed to contact them and see how they are doing. So I will ask them questions regarding how they are dealing with their new lives. I asked my friend Ricardo, who lives very close to me in Puerto Rico and goes to SCAD Savannah and is a photography major, how is he adjusting to the change. He responded with the thought that he dislikes it a lot in terms of academics, mainly because he is used to sharing thoughts with his teachers in person and the lack of this resource is affecting him because of the disconnect it creates and the limitations. Rafael another friend of mine who studies in the University of Puerto Rico told me that he is taking this time to be with his family. He also told me that he has a lot more time to deal with his personal tasks and hobbies that he cannot usually do all the time. He now doesn’t have to do all of his tasks by himself which is good but is missing his normal life and friends. Quarantine has affected all of us but we have to take the necessary precautions for this to not spread even more and prolong the quarantine.

Coronavirus and Quarantine

Coronavirus is a virus classified as a pandemic by the CDC and it is affecting the whole world. There is more than a million confirmed cases already. It has affected jobs, students and many more. Personally, it has been very bad as our freshman year has been cut short. I met so many people and established new relationships in my life and we were all sent back home and now we can’t see each other. This obviously made me very sad and I thought we were coming back to Dayton for this semester, but they made us wait 2 weeks and then came back to us with the news. They cancelled the semester and everyone was disappointed in social media expressing their thoughts regarding the situation. My daily routine now consists of the same and the online classes are not my thing at all. When in school I can be in a study environment and I got used to being at home and it always being vacation but now that I’m here I have to study and take tests and do homework when it is very difficult. I don’t like this at all, and I want it to end. The recession brings some opportunities at least, it has made markets gone down and the stock market has great prices. Now I have time to read, exercise and work on myself. We have to make the most of situations like this and I am trying to not die of boredom and strive through this.

Great Time To Be a Flyer

It’s a great time to be a University of Dayton Flyer, many great things are happening. What I want to highlight is the city of Dayton and our students and how everyone is excited because of the recent success our Basketball teams have been having. The women’s basketball team has been on a roll and just won the Atlantic 10 tournaments. NCAA basketball is huge, men’s basketball racks up incredible numbers in tv networks, especially in March. March Madness is when the conferences are playing for the championships in their tournaments and get a spot for the National tournament. The Men’s basketball team in Dayton haven’t been the best in recent years but have suddenly taken the basketball world by storm. They have impressed any college basketball fan and big networks such as ESPN and Bleacher Report. Our flyers have had a great season with 29 wins and only two losses early in the season. We are undefeated in the Atlantic ten conference with 18 wins, and this coming weekend we will compete in the tournament and then go on into the National tournament hopefully as the one seed in our bracket. Yesterday ESPN College Gameday, a very famous show in which ESPN analysts make a live show in a school which is making headlines in the college basketball world, came to Dayton and did a show here since we are ranked 3 in the whole nation and no one expected it. I am extremely excited for March Madness and what we will achieve in the tournament and make this school greater if we win!

Spring Break

Spring break is very close from today, and I can’t be more excited. School has been stressful lately. Being involved in the community and having many responsibilities like sports, organizations, and clubs both on and off campus just makes everything harder. On top of all of that I have classes, eighteen credits and I have to keep up with harder classes this semester. Spring break will be different this year because I will go back to Puerto Rico, but I have friends from our school that are coming with one of my Puerto Rican friends from school. I have so many things I want to do. First thing I want to do when I get back home is eat something! I am tired of eating here in Marycrest or VWK, it is very tiring the food here from America isn’t my favorite. As soon as I eat, I will go see my family and my dog because I miss them so much. The day after I get there, I’m having a road trip and going on a boat with my friends and going to mini islands and have a great time and staying there to sleep. I want to see all my friends from my high school and hangout with them where we always hangout on Fridays in the Placita in San Juan. We always have fun and go to the casino and have a great time there listening to music. Changing climates will be great and going back to my usual 18 legal age back home will be great, I can’t wait for it.

Time and Routine

I wake up, and it’s the same monotonous routine. It’s not something bad, it can be good sometimes. It takes 66 days to form a habit. I have formed my routine of this exciting yet draining college life for every day even on the weekends. Class, eat, gym, study, sleep, and repeat for the week. Every time we get to Friday, I get so happy and with just a blink of an eye it’s already gone, and I am fueled with desire for the weekend to come by as soon as possible. Sundays, oh Sundays are the worst. Sundays are when a new week starts and the past week is over, I do not like them because my routine for Sundays are always the same and always have the same sad vibes. Even though I wish for the week to go by really fast and I feel that it will be a slow week, if I don’t think about it too much, with just a blink of an eye again, it’s already Friday. Nights are long sometimes, sometimes I struggle academically or physically, but we get through these times and the best times are to come. I really enjoy the University of Dayton a lot, it is very fun and, in the weekends, I spend quality time with my friends and it is great. I have a lot to study for next week, but I’m pretty sure it’ll be a breeze waiting for Friday. I just hope this week goes by smoothly and that I enjoy it a lot.

Stress at It’s Finest

Life is a rollercoaster; I’ve never heard anyone in my life say that life is easy. A big challenge is to overcome long bursts of stress. For example, us college students can have an excess of stress when being fully loaded with tests and presentations and homeworks. Right now, I have a Religion test tomorrow, a second round interview 15 minute presentation on Tuesday, a Calculus test on Wednesday, a Comm project on Thursday, and finally another test on Friday for BIZ 201. The stress levels on my body are currently on all time high this semester. The classes are getting harder, the weather is getting colder, sleep is getting rarer, my concentration is becoming scarcer. College is hard, but the real life after college is even harder. The stress we face at college is just preparing us to face the challenges we will face in the future. What even is stress? Technically stress is the body’s reaction to any change that requires an adjustment or response. The body reacts to these changes with physical, mental, and emotional responses. Stress is a normal part of life. You can experience stress from your environment, your body, and your thoughts. How can we improve stress? Exercise helps stress because it makes you rest better and improve your self-esteem. Trigger the relaxation response, which means to relax and give yourself a break to whatever you’re doing or have. Finally, learn to be in the present moment and not trapped in your thoughts and feelings, learn to move on.

University of Dayton Experience

The University of Dayton so far has been a blessing. It is a space where students can grow both academically and socially. Where students can mature and become better as young adults and become ready to enter the real professional world. It has been the best decision I’ve ever taken in my life. I wasn’t sure if I had made the correct decision on leaving home, specifically to Dayton, Ohio. I knew I had to be ready to adapt, but the school and all of its resources and networking has made it all such a smooth transition. I wanted a medium sized school and the University of Dayton is the perfect size, everything is walking distance, but we are also a Division 1 school athletically which was important for me when choosing a school. I’ve watched and played sports my entire life and the school has great teams that I can root for. I was scared about maybe not being the best speaking the language here but my whole life I’ve been preparing for this and it has also been smooth and pretty easy, my high school back home was very good in regard to teaching us English. It has all been a blessing, I’ve made a lot of friends that will be there for me for the rest of my life. My networking here and the opportunities the school is given me every day is something that there just isn’t available back home in Puerto Rico. I love my island but this was the best decision I could take.

A Great Day

I usually don’t like Sundays, but today has been a beautiful day. I usually associate Sundays with sad, working days, in which my positive vibes are just not there. They are laundry days, homework days, study days, but especially cold days. Cold both temperature wise and emotionally, however today has been much different. I was writing in my room about the Super Bowl but as I looked through the window I saw the sun shining very bright and it reminded me of home, Puerto Rico which is always warm and sunny, and I had to go out and study in the tables next to the trees and just enjoy the sixty degree weather. Life is about doing and not imagining the stuff you want to do. I sat down and I began to think about everything while enjoying the beautiful weather. Who will win the Super Bowl? What was I going to eat later? How slow will this upcoming week go by? When was I going to start the rough draft? I tried answering some questions but I was inhaling the fresh air and releasing the stress and anxiety I was feeling when I woke up and realized it was Sunday. Here in Ohio, especially this spring semester the weather has been cold, and sometimes it is good to have such a beautiful day every then and now, but as I was thinking, I realized no matter the circumstances you have to wake up everyday and treat it like your last and make it a great day.

Legends never die

Today January 26th, 2020, Kobe Bryant has passed away. Bryant was an NBA superstar who played in the NBA for 20 seasons. Kobe Bryant was one of the most prolific athletes of our era and has impacted many people on and off the court. Kobe was more than just an athlete, he was an Oscar winning producer, an Espy Icon award winner, author, international icon who spoke 4 languages, and most importantly: a father. He was just 41 years old when he got in a helicopter crash with one of his four daughters, Gianna, she was just 13 years old. The world is impacted by this unfortunate event that has passed, but legends never die. Kobe will remain to leave his mark in the world, because that is what legends are. A legend is someone who leaves behind an unforgettable mark and impression on others, their lives are cheered, cherished, and never forgotten. Famous or not, legends impact and change others’ lives. There are other icons and legends who have recently passed away such as rapper Jared Higgins, known by his stage name “Juice Wrld”. He is the most listened to artist in SoundCloud history and unfortunately, he passed away due to a drug overdose. He struggled all his life with drugs coming from a very bad neighborhood in Chicago, from SoundCloud to a Number 1 album, the 21-year old had an impact to many peoples lives and carried a strong message about the dangers of the street and drugs in his songs. A gentle soul who cared for his fans. Legends will be created because of these two wonderful persons, but most importantly, they will never die.
